Analyzing music video 3

Beyonce - Single Ladies

This music video is performance however it isn’t very stereotypical as you wouldn’t usually see a performance in a studio. The style of this music video is performance because of the dance routine from beginning to end. This music video could also be classed as romantic. I think this because of the lyrics Beyonce is singing about. She is singing about proposing which is about love and marriage.
The purpose of this music video is to promote Beyonce's new single and to visualise the song. The purpose of this song is also for letting males know if they liked/like their partner then to get engaged.
Beyonce and her two dancers visualise the lyrics in this music video by miming the song and pointing to the finger to suggest getting engaged and that is all the visualising of the lyrics she shows as this whole music video is of her and her two dancers dancing.

This music video doesn't particularly reinforce the meaning because she is dancing in a studio and that is the only location therefore they aren't showing other partners getting engaged which is what Beyonce is singing about. Therefore this music video isn’t very stereotypically how viewers would imagine this music video to be.

In this music video you don't have to guess what is going on and it is very easy to understand as it is a straight forward music video in a studio with 3 dancers.
As this music video is in black and white it is quite hard to see what type of song this music video is implying. As they are dancing it could suggest dance music however it is a pop song therefore this scenery doesn’t represent the type of song it is.

In this music video it is black and white so therefore the lighting is quite bright to show facial features and Beyonce’s dance moves. As you watch the music video more you can see that there is a spotlight in the middle of their dance floor. This circle of light looks very good because it puts all the attention on the dancers. The editing in this video isn’t the most obvious however when you start to analyze the video it shows what effects they have used. For example when they dance they walk up and back down to make it look like a curve on the wall. The hard light emphases shadows and highlights and the hard lighting and the spotlight goes to high-key lighting. It is very flattering and creates less powerful shadows.

Another example is when the camera keeps moving in and out really fast like a zooming technique. One other effect in this music video is that it has a black background for a big majority of the video then it changes half way through to white then keeps switches back and forth. When watching the video you don’t really notice however it is actually quite an obvious effect. I think they are trying to put a mood on the song for example black could represent a harsh colour and white could represent a softer mood. In this video Beyonce mimes all of her words whilst in her dance routine. When relating this video it is quite difficult because I personally can’t think of any other music video’s where someone is dancing from beginning to end. If I had to compare this video to any it would be ‘Adele – Rolling In The Deep’ because Adele’s video is just set in one room where she sits down so it is quite a simple video like Beyonce’s but there is a lot to look at. Both music videos are set in one location.

The shot types in this video include long shots of when the three women are dancing. Another shot type is a tracking shot when the camera is making a circle around the dancers. They use different shot types in different music video to create a sense of atmosphere. There is also a medium close up of Beyonce when she uses a metal prop for her hand. They do this to show the metal prop in a clear way and they do this to maybe even show an emotion on her face as it is a medium close up. They want the viewers to interact with Beyonce's emotions.

The movements in this music video include a full dance routine for start to finish of 3 women however the main focus is on Beyonce as she is the artist for example where she bends down on her knee and the camera is just on her.

Analyzing music video 2

B*Witched - C'est La Vie

I think this music video could be romantic because the four girl band members are flirty with the male character and this suggests love and happiness. I also think this music video could suggest performance because of when the four girl band members perform their Irish dance routine.
The purpose of this music video is to have a lot of fun and to promote their new single. This music video was also produced for viewers to visualise the song.

In this music video the 4 girls dance and sing however they don't interpret the lyrics. For example they just dance in a four dancing to one boy. If you watched this music video with no sound the viewer’s wouldn’t be able to imagine one lyric as they don’t visualise the lyrics in their dancing and acting – however they do mime a majority of the song.

This is a very happy music video and they show this by the scenery as they are in colourful green grass with flowers and the sun is shining. Also the four girls in the group are also smiling therefore this suggests the happy mood. This is an example of pathetic fallacy where the weather reflects the mood and in this case the mood reflects the song.
This music video is not very hard to guess what is going on for example you can see the girls teasing the boy and they are just singing and dancing around him.

You can tell this music video is a pop song because they are wearing denim with bright coloured t-shirts and you can see it isn't a depressing rock song. The scenery is also very colourful therefore this implies a high-spirited song.

The lighting in this music video is very bright as it is set in a lot of greenery and bright blue sky. They are trying to use a natural light effect to make the setting look realistic.
The editing in this video is very effective for example in the chorus of the song there are two people standing one in front of the other and suddenly switch places. It looks as if they have used a fading technique whilst editing.

One thing effective about this video is that the starting and end position is the same. In their end position text is near their heads saying their names which is great because it allows the viewer to interact more with the artist. By having the names at the end it gives a bit of a modern twist because not many artists feature this in their music videos.

Another technique is when the camera spins when they’re laying on the grass as the camera is coming away from them. This makes it interesting because rather than having a shot of the band members lying on the grass - the camera is spiralling.

Another effect used is when one of the band members blows glitter. This looks like an effect they have done whilst editing because it adds a bit of fun and laughter.

The band members mime most of their song for example when they’re in a dance routine altogether. The times when they’re not miming are when they’re messing around trying to play around with a hosepipe.

This music video starts and ends in the same position therefore you could relate this video to ‘Taylor Swift – We Are Never Getting Back Together’ because this video starts and ends in the same position and place.

The shot types in this music video include a close up when one of the band members is scared of the dog and when another band member is dancing. They use these close up's in this music video because they want the viewers to see their expressions. There are also long shots of when the girls are acting out something or dancing. They use long shots in this scene of their music video because they want to viewers to see what is happening. They use a variety of different shots to make the music video interesting to look at and watch.

The main movements in this music video are when they’re dancing their dance routine for the video. At one stage in the song they do some Irish dancing. In this music video it is all set in the same scene however the story line with the boy gives the viewers a little storyline to be focused on. The dance routines make it fun and interesting to watch.

Analyzing music video 1

Elton John - I'm Still Standing

I think this music video is Performance because all the characters dancing around him suggest a show for the viewers however they are presenting this through a music video. This looks effective because it is interesting to watch and it keeps you amused.
The main purpose of this music video is to promote the song and to visualise the song. Maybe he is trying to show an experience he has had and he wants the world to know hes okay and hes happy. In this music video they visualise the lyrics by acting them out for example when Elton John sings "when I’m feeling like a little kid", he's imitating a little child's posture.
This music video is all about keeping positive hence the song name "I'm still standing" therefore it does show happiness as this music video's main setting is on a beach. Sea and sand are bright colours which suggest happiness. Also the lighting in this video is very bright. The natural lighting made this a happy video because the sun is shining.
In this music video you do to a degree have to guess what is going on for example Elton John is driving in his car and he's singing and this makes the viewer guess where he's going what he is singing about. As you see later on in this music video this video is a lot about his power that he is 'still standing' as you can see by chauffeur’s and the actors singing and dancing around him like he is the main focus with all the power. As this music video is a pop song it is quite cheery and happy therefore the location suits the song type. He is also wearing a white suit which suggests a jolly and joyful atmosphere.
The editing in this music video was very clever. At the beginning there is a shot of a circle which was showing the scenery and the rest was black then the circle slowly opened up for the whole screen to be the scenery. This is a good and effective technique because it entices you to watch more of the music video.
Another similar effect was where there was a tiny rectangle of Elton John and the rest of the screen was black and the rectangle opened up to see people standing next to him - hence the title of the song. The effects of this video were very good because there were various amounts of shapes which opened up for the viewer to see more which makes the music video intriguing and it makes the music video interesting to watch.
Elton John mimed all this music video. An example of this is when he mimed in the car and when he was walking down the street. As he was miming to the camera it was as if he is trying to tell a story. When he mimes into the camera it is like he is singing to the viewers so the viewers understand the lyrics.
If I was to relate this to a similar music video it would be ‘Take That – Shine’ due to the props they use such as the piano and the artists were all wearing hats. They are also both two very happy videos with upbeat rhythms.
The shot types in this music video include a wide variety such as long shots of Elton John when he was on the beach pointing to all the other characters. This shot shows a full shot of his whole body. There was also a medium close up of him in the car as the camera followed him driving. This shot is good because the viewers get close and personal to the artist.Overall this music video is dated but when it was released it would have been a great video to watch but in the modern day there are many new editing techniques used to make it more interesting to watch, however the effective techniques draw the viewer in. The music video was set in a nice area and the weather was very good therefore I'm sure a lot of people will smile when watching this music video when they see sun, sea and sand.
